I Want To Say, Happy Fathers Day

As you know today is Father's Day. For many years even through childhood, I wasn't close with my father. My mom and him got divorced when I was 3. The last time I saw him was when I was about 8 maybe 8 1/2.

When I came to Canada from London, England just before I turned 9 up until my late teens, we barely spoke (maybe the odd letter back and forth, here and there). Our communication was reinstated after my daughter was born when I was 21. It didn't last though. By 23 we had a falling. And you know what they say about 2 bulls in one pen? Ain't nobody backing down. We hung up on each other and sent each other final letters with harsh words.

Last year January 19th I had a major accident behind the wheel of a tanker. About a week or two after my accident, I told a friend or two that I thought it was time to travel back to England and make amends with the old man. I found out a few months later that I wouldn't have that chance because he died 8 days after I had my accident.

I never thought much of it at the time. But on a day like today I'm left with a gap of sorts, a feeling of regret. See now I will never have that chance. And though most of my lessons have come via way of loss, I could've prevented that from happening.

So on a day like today, Father's Day, I have a message for all you children, adults, whoever that might be upset with their fathers and not speaking to them. If you can, swallow your pride, pick up the phone or whatever it takes and make a step in the right direction. As long as he never hurt you in an improper way, do it. Because one day, life will go from it's never too late to too late! And you'll be left with a whole bunch of things you want to say that you can't.

RIP Neville
