Probably wrong, but I think its the way society is changing. And not for the better.
The insular and paranoid habits of adults are translating into the children of this generation. Nobody allows the kids to walk around without a metaphorical armed escort. Children are kept under tight supervision at all times. The social aspects of childhood are being slowly but surely ripped apart.
All for the saying "we are keeping our children safe"
Not an easy thing to fix.
