I Think Social Media Does More Harm Than Good

“Social media generate dopamine, associated with pleasure, and hence can drive addiction. The main problem is that when dopamine goes up, serotonin goes down. So, online communication is actually a major causative factor of unhappiness. Lustig also elaborates on how companies — both food manufacturers and electronics companies — capitalize on the biology of dopamine versus serotonin to get us addicted to their products. “ ~ Dr. Joseph Michael Mercola, in a review of “The Hacking of the American Mind: The Science Behind the Corporate Takeover of Our Bodies and Brains” by Robert H. @beckychandler I think the best we can do is teach socially responsible use. To deny it to them would ostracize them and stop them from being able to function socially. Plus they'll need it as adults. We need to teach not deny.
Internet media in general has profound cognitive effects. Content draws interest by triggering us and this uncalibrates our senses of risk and reward. Content also panders to confirmation and story bias. The short formatting of content and hyperlinking renders us unable to focus on long narratives and complex problems and we lose our ability to forrage for information. It also distorts our sense of what is important. Combining that with the neurochemical effects you mention and the whole of the internet is largely poison without applying ration and discipline.

Meaningless interactions with strangers increases loneliness and isolation .... it’s good in small doses and if used correctly ... but some people need to spend some more time in the real world

I recently watched a tv segment on this, and it makes perfect sense. Defo not good for our brains in the long run. It's not a natural form of interaction.

Moderation I think is key. I am finding if you constantly compare yourself to others, it can be harmful. Also the fact that now people can post things on a computer without saying it to someone's face is cowardly. I have had people act like that towards me and it is upsetting and disturbing

I’d love a chance to talk with you if you can give me the chance :)
