Me too. New clothes were rare. I was a preacher’s daughter and most of the clothes my sisters and brothers and I wore were hand-me-downs from parishioners’ children. There was one wealthy couple who had one daughter and they dressed her well. I was two years younger, so I wore her clothes most of my growing up years. Her mother delighted in walking up to me in a group and saying, “Oh, I remember that sweater. Cecilia looked wonderful in that. It’s not quite your color, though, is it?”
But guess what? We were loved and nurtured by our parents and the money they saved on clothes was spent on us anyway.
Hand-me-downs are irritating, but not fatal. ☺
