Made sense at the time. He promised a change from the corrupt regime that had ruled Egypt since the fall of the Monarchy. He also promised he would not try to impose a strict version of Islam on Egypt.

He failed on both counts. Worse, he thought he had the military under control. This is why he's now referred to as the late President of Egypt.

It was a very interesting and inexplicable time, wasn't it?
