I Support Women's Rights

SO I learned a new word today.. slut walks.. lol there see i admit i dont know everything :P So I am trying to learn..

This came about following a discussion re two women's pics both using the word slut and the implication was that somehow this showed that feminism wasnt working.. Leaving that aside I tried to explain how women, even though we have come a long way, and even though younger gens, male and female tend to believe we HAVE equality, so there's no need for all that feminism stuff.. We actually do NOT have equality or anywhere near it...

I mentioned things like pay gap where women doing the same job still have a long way to go re closing the gap between what men are paid and women are paid.. I mentioned the difficulty whereby most childcare falls to women, which is fine if they are happy to do that but there exist unbelievable difficulties where the woman tries to return to work when it comes to childcare during sickness, school holidays, working late etc... and that if a woman takes time out to have kids this counts against her too and often she ends up in low paid part time work..

I didn't mention how even tho many young people believe, certainly in the UK, that we are all now nicely equal.. things like assaults against women, rape, and domestic abuse are on the increase and sadly this is even more common among younger people.. where it seems that many have been hit by their boyfriend etc.. and that it's almost considered normal..

Yea i am OLD but I was around when things were very different -I saw the suffering and injustice... i see that there's still a way to go.. and worse i see worrying trends that we are back tracking..

Not everyone will or should read the following links... but in case anyone wants a look... I think there are articles for and against

Just read thanks

The pay gap exists, I don't think that's under dispute

Why it exists is usually blamed on "sexism"
But there are many many reasons and most are not related to inequality
Many blanket statements on the pay gap don't look at the nuances...

Secondly, there is no doubt that violence against women exists and it's abhorrent.

Truth is men are statistically more likely to suffer violence and violent death

It is NOT sexist about saying emotion is connected to it...

I never said the pay gap doesn't exist
I said the reasons for it are very nuanced

I pre-empted by saying stats / causal connections and confounding factors
And Relying on science not opinions based upon emotion

This applies to many arguments

To call it sexist is ridiculous
"Sexism" is often used as a defence argument, especially when there is a lack of depth to understanding the facts

I dislike your comment about rape

As for your own experience
This is of experience value as a case study as an example case studies are important in medical literature
But is not a replacement for a random controlled trial

People will recall what suits their agenda or opinion and not recall the antithesis

Like you i have plenty of examples of observations from real life... both positive and negative

And again to defend my statements
I never made any sexist remarks
I said simply that by saying male victims are at the hands of male assilaiants is an illogical argument

@Adaydreambeliever: You said "everyone should be a feminist as it helps both men and women".

Feminism is seen as a campaign for equality for women. That's illogical. Eequality can't be one sided, it has to be for all.
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@Caroline259 Well in a world where we are all equal there would be no need for feminism.. until such times, and while so many women are still shortchanged, suffer a lack of opportunities and are compelled to make more sacrifices than men.. then we need feminism.
How individuals define feminism is another thing.. and how we play with the words still another.. equality for women means equality with men.. so not one sided. And Feminism does generally take on board the inequalities and specific factors that sometimes count against men

I do hate to burst that bubble but the wage gap is not a thing as they think it is
AlmightyLoad · 26-30
the wage gap is from total earning over lifetime. and women choose jobs that pay less and they work less hours than men that explains away the wage gap it is illegal to pay a women less if they did she could take them to court
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@WaterSpirit: That's correct. Women tend to choose lower paid jobs. As you say, men and women doing the same job must be paid the same. In some cases, women earn more than their male partners.
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@Caroline259 well when you say *choose* that leaves out a mighty wadge of factors and understanding regarding the reasons they end up *choosing* those jobs.. in reality the choice is one that is forced on them by circumstance, child-care and other caring responsibilities, discrimination still and inequality.. So in actual fact it's not really a *choice* in the way we sometimes imply
