I'm Honest and Friendly
Everyone has disputes with others. That is a constant within our lives, and I don't believe anyone has a different perspective.
If you disagree with someone - how do you come to terms with them? You try to explain your view, and persuade them. Usually, while you are attempting that process, they are attempting the same process in reverse. They want to convince you that you were wrong!
Now, I think that conflicts like this are inevitable, and not only a negative. Many of these conflicts become negative, but that's because of the people's attempts at resolution.
If you want to convince someone of your viewpoint, which differs from theirs; then you must persuade them. If you tell them they are a fool for believing the way that they do - it will undoubtedly make them defensive. Now they will double down on their belief, and likely even respond with something potentially emotionally hurtful to you.
All of a sudden, it's not about convincing the other person anymore. Now it's about proving them "wrong" and obviously, because they are "wrong" then you must be "right."
But, persuasion is not it's most effective when it's derogatory. It is it's most effective when it's positive and logical.
I just think a lot of people lose sight of this fact. For instance, people who are very religious - they believe in their faith strongly - and it can be so strong that they will insult others of different religions, because they view them as being "so wrong." But, the PURPOSE of religion is to have everyone be nice and help each other - so it seems to not be completing it's original task when there are wars or disputes over the different notions.
A similar metaphor is skiers and snowboarders. Some don't have any genuine preference at all, but other people are DEDICATED to their sport, and the fact that their sport is superior to the alternative. So a skier and snowboarder might not get along, despite the fact their goals are really similar. They want to just slide down the hill on this fancy stick - or sticks... Those are pretty similar activities...
Anyway - I'm going to try to be more accepting and more of a benefit to the world. Here I go, wish me luck!
