I Hate Bad News

Bad news for me today was reading that Uderzo, the creator of Asterix, has died 😔

Sad... But just to set the record straight, Asterix was "written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo". Uderzo illustrations were masterful and without a doubt were a big part of Asterix success. But the true genius of Asterix was the writting: the plots, the subtle allusions to contemporary society, etc... I read most of not all the original Asterix comic books by Goscinny and Uderzo, and they were brilliant in so many levels. Goscinny died in 1977 though, and Uderzo carried on as writer and illustrator. Asterix didn't change visually, but the quality of the writing took a nose dive. The witty, insightful plots were replaced by corny, predictable stories (including a ridiculous plot involving aliens). The Asterix books written by Uderzo were not up the the standard that gave the series renown. It's sad that in the 15+ years that Uderzo worked with Goscinny, he never seemed to grasp the latter's brilliant writing, and definitely never came close to matching Goscinny skill in writing.

So it would be more accurate to say that "Uderzo, the illustrator of Asterix, has died", Rest in piece. I for one will always admire his brilliance as illustrator.

@drymer I think that is true. It was also Goscinny that insisted on Asterix being a small, witty warrior with a big nose. Uderzo wanted Asterix to be tall, serious and noble as far as I know.

Did Uderzo never grasp Goscinny's brilliant writing? I don't know. He could not imitate or match his skill in writing and I won't blame him for that. Nobody can be talented at everything.

@drymer I wrote 'the creator' to make things more simple, but it is true I should have written 'one of the two creators of Asterix'. I totally agree with you, the post-Goscinny books are much weaker.

@Burrito Not a novel but comic bands. They were tremendously successful in Europe but not in the U.S.
