This is HUGE cultural problem. Not just online, but in real life.
There are men with a sense of nuance. And sadly many women nicely assume that they will see the ( to us) obvious signs of disinterest.
Ameican men are largely, in the same emotional state they were in Junior High school ( 12-16 years old)
You cannot "hint" to these fellows, here or in person.
You have to say clearly, and firmly.
