I used to do it too and when I sold my collection, it ruined the motivation to ever start again. It's really interesting to see how each country represents their culture on their stamps. Do Hungarian stamps still say "Magyar Posta" on them?
@GlassDog Yes they do! I've found a number of them already in my stamp box. If you decide to start collecting again it's much easier these days it seems. Much more options online for dealers and economic ways to do it.

@EllaDisenchanted I think I would like to start again. When I was young, you sent off and got a bag of mixed stamps by return post. There was a coin and stamp collecting shop a couple of miles away but they only sold really rare, expensive stuff.
@GlassDog When I want to add some chance to finding something good I go on ebay and get a packet of mixed stamps for around $10 or so. Usually I get lucky with some stuff I like.

@EllaDisenchanted That's a good idea. I only ever bought from dealers and I just knew they'd taken all the good ones out and were selling the things with no real worth.
@GlassDog Dealers look either to the bigger investors and wallets or to the random beginners that don't realize they're overpaying for common stamps they can get for pennies.

This is my favorite guy I buy from. There's plenty of definitives and commons but he doesn't cherry pick. I've found Columbian Expositions and early classics from all over along with more recent harder to find countries like Iraq and Japan.

@EllaDisenchanted That's really good of you to share. He ships to my country and the price looks really reasonable. It's just reminded me of the thrill of opening a packet of stamps for the first time and looking through them to see what you've got!
@GlassDog I've bought 15 or 20 of his mixes the last few months and I'm not disappointed at all. Even the occasional damaged ones are going in to my pile to use for crafts.
