Children don't always have to be happy, they can have the same complex emotions as adults do.

When it comes to illness or death, don't lie to them, explain with a few simple words. Don't be afraid to comfort them and be there for them, because they're capable of comforting you even more if you let them.
I know of children whose parent was about to die and up until the last minute the adults wouldn't admit that to them. What if they want to be there for their parents as much as possible and say the last words? What if the shock is far worse now?
If you don't want them lying to you, or acting like immature spoiled brats, then you should start being truthful towards them first.

I agree. I was always told to suck it up because the death isn't about me and it would upset the adults. I still can't mourn properly.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@SwampFlower that's just wicked, such selfish adults.

@HannibalAteMeOut Death is reality as much as life is and the faster kids know that, the better for them to confront it.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@msros true
This! This right here!

This is also a prime example of #AnarchistLogic and something I was raised with.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Amyrakunejo didn't know it was anarchist logic, sounds more like logic in general to me, but yeah that's how I was raised as well because my own mom has experienced this, sadly.
@HannibalAteMeOut It is logical, but Statist fucktards would never, ever allow their young to experience emotion or allow them to think for themselves.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Amyrakunejo sounds a lot like it

Very true. I second that.
Kids aren't fkn stupid, you just need to be straightforward with them but in a sensible way..
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Mandalorian exactly! They can sense when something's wrong anyway.
Nanori · F
@HannibalAteMeOut and they'll eventually figure out you've been lying to them and then never believe anything you say again.
Coppercoil · M
as a child I disagree with this.. I want to be protected and never grow up.. and if you don't protect me I will burn your f'ing village to the ground.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@Coppercoil not my village please, choose the nearby one 😢
Coppercoil · M
@HannibalAteMeOut done! 🖤
I agree. You can't expect or enforce 100% positivity.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@DarkCrazyArtistGeekGamer that would be toxic positivity
I wasn’t a complex child. I had one mindset the whole time: “give me a pass from school so I can go play with the tourist kids on the beach.”
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@SirenCalledLuce hahaha well that's one of a kind

Λατρεύω σε! Ολοσωστη απλά κι όμορφα
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
Agreed, although it should be done in a comforting and kind way. I wasn't lied to about death, but the way it was usually explained to be was without much sympathy, making me feel isolated with my grief.
HannibalAteMeOut · 22-25, F
@basilfawlty89 it's like people don't believe children have feelings, for real.
