I moved out two years ago, but really moved out "emotionally" four years before that when I left for university.

Despite the geographical separation, there are still a lot of connections. I pay for YouTubeTV which they use. They pay for Netflix & Prime & Hulu which I use. I'm on their cell plan, but I pay my costs each month. My point is that where it makes sense, there is nothing wrong with shared expenses. But I do think it's important to carry your own weight.

I'm happy to answer any questions you have. 🙂

@GirlSerendipity Got it. Certification in what? (If you don't mind sharing)

@GirlSerendipity Oh very cool. You'll do well with that. Lots of demand, good job security, good money. 🙂

Make sure you know the code to the burglar alarm before you get there. Buy a fire extinguisher. Put together a medical kit for everyday injuries. If it's unfurnished buy just what you need as a bare minimum at first. When you've lived there a few months, you'll have a better idea of what you're actually going to need.
GirlSerendipity · 26-30, F
@jomsim thanks! sounds useful, though not fun so much
jomsim · 26-30, M
@GirlSerendipity Yeah, you get the practical stuff out of the way, and then you have the fun.

I wish I had more in my savings account. Unexpected costs are always difficult when funds are limited.
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@Pinkstarburst I had $1,500 in my account, enough for a full year's rent, I went spend crazy and spent it all within two months :/

Get the job first. Determine if you are on your own (single apartment location) or with roommate(s). See if you are able to NOT have a car...public transportation which is easily accessible and on route to your place of work...can be a very big $ saver. One life hack...if you have the need for work footwear...learn to leave this footwear at work only and use travel footwear between commutes. Seems a bit silly but saves a ton of wear and tear
Pay your bills first before spending money on the fun stuff
@GirlSerendipity crazy right?!?!
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@GirlSerendipity When you go three weeks without food, you will be glad you went grocery shopping first.

Be ready financially and don't expect it to be easy.....its not. I wish you well!!
updown2020 · 61-69, M
Well have you moved out?
updown2020 · 61-69, M
@GirlSerendipity Oh okay make sure you ask the landlord to change the locks in front of you that way you know they have been changed and that only you have the keys otherwise you have no idea how long the lock has been on the door and how many people have keys. Yes people are suppose to turn the keys but did they and did they have more keys. And deadbolt are the best meaning you need the key to lock it from the outside
GirlSerendipity · 26-30, F
@updown2020 ah . . . hadnt thought about that. thanks
updown2020 · 61-69, M
@GirlSerendipity And what ever you want done to the place before you move in have it make on the lease.
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
Just make sure it's in a good neighborhood
missit15 · 56-60, M

The only regret will be not doing it sooner! 😂

When I moved out I never have had a roommate I think that is good but it's also bad it made it harder when I got married having to learn how to live with someone but it also teaches you Independence and you have your nice own place of solitude you can always go to without being bothered by anyone
anderst · 46-50, M
Is this than for your Parents ok when you moved out?
anderst · 46-50, M
@GirlSerendipity ok like most moms. But I guess you have more freedom and fun when you moved out
GirlSerendipity · 26-30, F
@NativeOregonian whatever the word is for 'crazy strong super pull' thats what i feel around this
NativeOregonian · 51-55
@GirlSerendipity That is good, it means you are driven and it helps you to set goals in order to :)
Budgeting, budgeting, knowing when and where to stop buying.

Always have an extra set of keys and emergancy funds, been there when hydro or other bills get behind due to other room mates.

Don’t worry about the past and concentrate on your future and enjoy the present in your new Home 🏠😘

Wish i would have taken the offer to go to Hawai with my gf. Her parents were paying for everything!
NativeOregonian · 51-55
I aged out of my group home the day before I turned 18, I wish I had chosen the apartment with a window a/c unit.
MrGoodbar · 51-55, M
Where are you moving from? Your parent's home?
GirlSerendipity · 26-30, F
@MrGoodbar yep . . . in a few months hopefully!!!!
MrGoodbar · 51-55, M
@GirlSerendipity this is going to sound stupid, but buy the good stuff. Buy the 5 dollar can opener not the cheap 2 dollar one and things like that. Trust me on this one

testing the waters of more freedom!
