Patrisse cullors resigns, what does this mean for BLM?
Hey it’s uncle Rupert ( as one doofus called me on an old post of mine )
Make sure you have your chips and dip, because this one is gonna be a bit longer than my usual posts.
To start let’s do a quick refresher on what BLM is , what it’s supposed to be , and where the idea came from.
After a 17 year old kid by the name of Trayvon martin was M#rdered for seemingly no reason and the killer ( George Zimmermann) walked away with no jail time, this led to a feeling of “we’ve been here many times .” Amongst the black community.
After the “not guilty” verdict was handed down, a young lady by the name of Alicia Garza put out a tweet saying Black Lives Matter. And thus a hashtag was born .
In early 2014 yet another black teenager was M#rdered, but instead of the killer being the son of a judge ( Zimmerman ) this time it was a police officer ( Darren Wilson ) but all the same as the Martin case, the deceased was made out to be the aggressor and the killer the one worthy of sympathy.
It worked, Darren Wilson walked away without so much as probation.
This led to riots as well as physical clashing between the people of Ferguson, and the police.
There were 2 phrases that were gaining ground in the midst of it all
The first being “ Hands up, don’t shoot!” And the latter that seemed to take its place , “Black Lives matter.”
The latter gained a lot of mainstream attention, and scrutiny early on, even getting accused of being a “ pro Russia group .” During the presidential election.
But that didn’t last very long, and before we knew it there were chapters throughout the United States even out in Canada, and the United Kingdom.
While there is a big debate about how they got so much momentum in such a short amount of time, a popular theory seems to be some rich guy named George Soros gave BLM its funding.
I don’t know if that’s the case but it’s become a talking point used by most of their critics.
What I can attest to is that one of their earliest critics Darren seales along with other grass root activists from the city of Ferguson, rebuked BLM, often referring to them as “ Actorvist.” That were only intent on chasing the bag.
Accusations that range from BLM running off with the money they raised and not helping Ferguson, to accusations of them not supporting the brown family are not unusual to hear.
Critics of BLM would regularly express a belief that these people were only cashing in on the deaths of Black men, but these criticisms were and are usually brushed off thanks to the popularity of the movement.
But as BLM was not only raising money themselves also getting celebrity endorsements as well as donations, it brought us back to the original question from their critics “ Where’s all that money going?”
Not even a full year apart the movement was now facing criticism by 2 parents that had been closely associated with it.
Michael brown SR the father of Micheal brown JR ( Ferguson ) who wanted BLM to give 20 million of the 90 million they raised in 2020 to help grass root efforts in Ferguson, where they’d made a name for themselves.
And Samara rice the mother of tamir rice, a 12 year old who was M*rdered by police while playing with a toy gun. She’d expressed strong skepticism in BLM, civil attorney Ben crump, and Tamika Mallory.
This was Followed by one of the creators of the movement patrisse cullors having information about homes that she’d purchased, released publicly.
Something many critics felt contradicted her self appointed “ trained Marxist.” Title
This discovery has led many to believe that this is where the money could possibly be going, towards the lifestyles of the 3 ladies who came up with BLM.
Recently cullors has stepped down from her position in BLM amid this controversy, what exactly does mean for the movement as a whole? Will it determine what direction they go? Will anyone else be facing the same scrutiny as cullors ?
How did a movement that was simply created to push for police accountability, become so polarizing amongst the community it was seemingly started for?
Are grass movements a better option?
