Handsome Men Are Cheaters

The more attractive a man is, the more testosterone he has. The more testosterone a man has, the more likely he is to cheat.

I don’t think the study established a strong causal relationship between testosterone and cheating.

It was mentioned that men in committed relationship have lower levels.

It could even be the other way around…. the men’s testosterone levels increased as a result of their “new activities”.

And because this study was not performed where you have a control group to compare with, and testosterone is not something administered to one group but not the other, you cannot establish the causation or even a strong correlation.

@CookieCrumbs This makes sense
@GJOFJ3
Hormonal levels of testosterone (or other hormones) fluctuate over our lifetime. And so many factors affect those fluctuations. Even life situations that have nothing to do with sexual health or activity could factor into the mix.

If you connect the 2 studies — Im not in any way claiming to be an expert — there is a cortisol/stress component…
> more stress, less T

> less stress, more T > look healthier > perceived as more attractive.

They may not be physically good looking. But they are “perceived” as attractive by the limited number of females who were surveyed.

❗️One should also note that attractiveness has a cultural component. The same Latvian men may not be seen as attractive by other women from a different culture.
@CookieCrumbs They may see a correlative pattern based on increased opportunities, but anybody that’s studied any data sets know that correlation does not imply causation. It could be completely coincidental or pushed not by the individual but merely increased opportunity based on the same good looks.
@DarkHeaven
Totally agree with you.
@CookieCrumbs The sample size was small, data sets flawed, but the article also admits as much. It was an interesting read but the implication they give is just not supported by the data at all.
@DarkHeaven
And that is tricky. They make some readers draw conclusions based on a catchy title.
@CookieCrumbs Very much an opinion piece... and if anything that data leads towards the fact that beautiful people have more opportunity to cheat (typically,) but we all already knew that. You could potentially make an argument that high levels of testosterone make someone more likely to cheat based on higher libidos, but we’d need to see the actual testosterone levels measured and it would be a much different looking study. What is considered attractive, is subjective at best and it’s hard to even draw a correlation between looks and testosterone levels.
@DarkHeaven
And it would be a different study altogether to establish that high libido makes someone predisposed to cheating. I don’t think I’d agree with this.

Someone with high libido but in a loving commuted relationship can channel all that energy (😉) to the partner. There are just so many factors (circumstances and opportunities) that come into play with infidelity.
@CookieCrumbs Agreed. It’s very complex and all you’d be able to get to is propensity to cheat at best.

@HotDad I just go where the data leads, and their argument was pretty weak. It was interesting read, though.

People would publish anything online just to build interest in the subject. At the pretense of declaring “according to a study…”

And just because they state some percentages and numbers, that doesn’t mean their results are conclusive.

Fact-checking also means finding out if connections make sense.
@HotDad
Do you know that women have some measure of testosterone hormones too? Look it up.

If you believe that testosterone = male attractiveness….. then what about women who have low levels of it?

@CookieCrumbs Women with higher testosterone levels have higher sex drives too.
@HotDad
But who decided what is considered attractive? What do feminine features have to do with attractiveness? How about men attracted to men with testosterone? Or women attracted to women?

It wouldn’t serve you well in your understanding of the world around you if you generalize all the time.
@DarkHeaven
Yes, you’re right about that.
@CookieCrumbs I always like to help paint such broad strokes. lol 😊

@DarkHeaven
The world is not black and white.
I’m glad… 😉
@CookieCrumbs I have have high testosterone levels for a girl. Gives me a pretty high libido and I have to be careful not to work out too much because I gain muscle mass very quick for a girl and end up getting that cut look. I want to be feminine and look like a girl, so I walk but I don’t ever lift weights or anything. I just don’t like that look, really.
