Vitamin D has been in the news again, with more people apparently being deficient in it. Perhaps it's just that more people are being tested for it. I was never tested for it or offered supplements despite a chronic illness that I've had for 17 years which has left me unable to walk, get out or get any sunlight except rarely for just a few minutes for most of this time. I was told there was a programme on TV recently where some people who lived self sufficiently grew their own food included mushrooms, which they dried in the sun (for preservation). They were the only vegetable that actually absorbed vitamin D in the sunlight so it contained more which presumably can get absorbed by our bodies, which is interesting. Even more so if you turn them over because they have a larger volume to absorb sun rays on the back.

I was recently told I had no vitamin "d", in me. I was prescribed 50,000 units a week, prescribed!!! I love I'm the freaking desert, how is that possible?
Vitamin D is an over the counter low cost item.. typical dose for women if 4000 to 8000 IU a day, for men 6000 to 10000 IU daily. In CanAda I can buy 360 for about $8.. is yours in liquid or tablet form?

I was told a few years back I was very low on vitamin D but only after my mum asked if I could be tested. I was pretty sure it would be low as I live with a condition that means I almost never can see daylight. I can't actually remember if I was tested before or after I went on something to try and help my anaemia (the contraceptive injection - it's meant to stop your periods) and it was only then I was prescribed calcium and vitamin D (in one) -as there was risk of loss of bone density and I'm almost completely bedbound and have been for about 15yrs. Considering that I should have been on it before.

Enough of me - I have no idea what dose vit d that was but I went on a high dose vit d as well as someone with m.s recommended that and we took the advice, esp as it took forever to get my iron level up.

It does sound a lot but I know it's measured in micrograms...
Would you have guessed you were that low with your lifestyle? I hope it sorts itself out soon! Low vit D can mean a poor immune system too.

@Majorlatency: liquid gel pill form. I have been anemic for the last 3 years for internal bleeding

@Majorlatency: Goes to show how large a dose he was given, then. He'd have to take at least 10 of that dose...And the doses are usually less than the recommended amount, so likely more.

@ronisme1: My high dose one is a gel capsule too. The combined calcium and vitamin D is chewable.

It might be worth taking magnesium and/or calcium as they all help each other absorb. I wonder if your body wasn't absorbing the presumably small amount it got.

i don't know - all i know is after taking a iron supplement for almost 1 year - i am for the first time in 3 years - not anemic. now this - the vitamin "d" thing.
50000 IU a week is about 7000 to 8000 IU a day. So the dose is totally in line with daily recommendations..

@ronisme1: That is interesting - similar experience. Do you eat a fairly good diet? Does sound like you may not be absorbing stuff perhaps as your levels are so low or take a while to get up to normal. (Actually with me it was ferritin not haemoglobin level but treatment is the same).
