I Hate Sexual Abuse

My post about physical and sexual violence against Native American women made me think about my own experience with sexual abuse. When I first started getting help for the molestation I experienced during my childhood, I was hopeful that things might have been better for other girls like me, especially with the "Me Too" movement making people more aware of sexual assault. I was completely dismayed to learn that absolutely nothing has changed, that things are as worse as ever and there are still so many other young indigenous girls going through the same thing I did, if not worse. Unfortunately, Native Americans being one of the poorest and overlooked demographics in the US makes indigenous women easy targets for these crimes. I myself grew up in a very poor home in an isolated reservation community and I believe this played a big part in my molester preying on me when I was a child, as she (yes, she) probably knew my situation would make her more likely to get away with doing what she did to me. And sure enough, she did! I'm sure that kind of thinking is also what plays a significant role on why this happens to indigenous women. Because we are easy targets! Sexual predators know they have a good chance at getting away with it when it comes to us. I don't understand how rape and sexual assault can be widely viewed as one of the most horrible crimes a person could commit, yet the demographic who experiences it the worst in the US goes completely unnoticed!

Sadly the Native American demographics go unnoticed for way too many things :(
