which one is the prequel and which ones the sequel? vampire diarys or the originals?

Vampire Diaries is the first series and centered on Stefan Salvatore (or at least that's how it went). The originals are characters introduced in several seasons. Basically since the originals are too awesome characters, they made The Originals series as a spin-off (at least that's what I think). They did show the relation later on.
