What Popular Dog Breeds Used to Look Like [I Love Dogs a Lot]

Are you dog lover? No? Okay. Well even so, I'm sure you'll find this interesting!

Many of the most popular dog breeds have undergone some radical changes over the last century due to selective breeding. Most of these changes were done to make them look more visually appealing and for better or for worse (mostly worse in terms of the breed's health), some are totally unrecognizable from how they originally looked! See for yourself...

Most of the changes these breeds have undergone have led to some or even numerous health problems for them. I won't name them all here, but it's an important thing to note that while they may look cuter or more elegant than they did before, it came at the cost of their health for many of the breeds.

Anyway, this post was mainly to show how different these breeds look than they originally did. There's plenty more I didn't include and I would highly recommend you look them up if you're curious. If you own a dog whose breed wasn't featured here, they may very well look much different than they originally did too!

Thanks for reading!

I actually prefer the originals, I think it's awful we inbreed defects into dogs because people think it looks cute.
Ducky · 31-35, F
@AntisocialTroll Agreed. There needs to be a collective effort to breed them into healthier forms. Though I know it's not possible for some of them. But those that can be changed, they all may be stuck with their problems now, but we can make it better for the future of the breeds.

The short legs get concerning regarding health 😕

This pisses me off...fucking people 🙄

Very interesting! But why do humans do this? I have read that pugs suffer from the modifications to their faces, short sinuses.
Ducky · 31-35, F
@FlowersNButterflies To make them look visually appealing. Often short-sighted with no regard for the dog's health.
FlowersNButterflies · 61-69, F
Very sad. I read german shepherds have hip dysplasia, great danes only live short lives, have heart attacks, cocker spaniels go blind. All to appease the weird human ego. @Ducky

That weenie dog with the little helmet lol
Ducky · 31-35, F
@Talesfromthedarkside Made into a sort of mascot during the Great War, perhaps? But it shows how much better their mobility was when they had longer legs and less stretched out bodies.
That’s a shit ton of dogs. lol
