I Got The Cane At School

It was real scary waiting outside the headmistresses office when you knew you were probably going to get the cane. The cane hurt like nothing else and it was dead scary waiting outside with a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach, knowing that in a short while your bum was going to feel like it had been branded with a red hot iron. Some girls were even in tears before they went in. I certainly cried more than once just seeing her get the cane out and telling me to bend over. Even worse when the caning started, of course. Absolute agony. Dead scary!

I remember boys (aged 8-11) bursting into tears when told they were going to be caned, and waiting tearfully outside the head's study. I was lucky and never got it.

How many strokes did you get, @jennypenny?

It was 3 or 6 depending on your crime

Were canings frequent? At my school they were pretty rare, which somehow added to the mystique for those of us (the majority) who escaped.

@MartinII: The cane was a regular feature of school life when I was at school. Nearly all my contemporaries got it at least once and most got it several times. It was used so much it ceased to be effective as a disciplinary tool. I got it all through secondary school including 6th form. Many parents used canes in the home too. My parent's did and so did some of my friends' parents so I often got it other than at school and parents usually caned on the bare too.

@Sharon: I think the cane was sometimes used in school for revenge or retribution rather than as a considered disciplinary tool. Certainly one boy in my class got a terrible beating for that reason, aged 10. Didn't do him any good. Canings were less frequent, and easier to take, as we got older.

@MartinII: I think you're right. Although I never experienced the sheer brutality you describe, my teachers couldn't have considered it a disciplinary tool because it obviously didn't work. The same students were slippered and caned time and time again but they still carried on misbehaving.

I've smoked behind the bike sheds at school with my arse still burning from being caned for smoking - and I wasn't the only one.
