Checks and Balances

No matter who wins or loses the upcoming election, the USA needs to revisit its system of checks and balances because the presidency has simply become too powerful through decades of acquiescence by Congress of its constitutional role and a failure by the judicial branch to police the executive branch. The Founding Fathers never envisioned the executive branch to be as powerful, relative to the other branches, as it is today.

We have an executive branch that has taxing power, can declare and initiate war, can choose who wins and loses in our judicial system, can set the rules for elections, and can effectively control government spending. None of this is apparent from a plain reading of the Constitution, but it is today's reality.

If this continues, someday a president will simply establish a dictatorship. It is not far fetched at all.
