I Love My Work

I am a customer service specialist with a focus in trouble shooting, team building, and training. While my passion for this comes from technical support, I found my skills works equally well in retail.

For years I was a retail manager operating a holiday store. I had a blast running at a full sprint from October to January. 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, no time off, hourly pay, under staffed, under supported, and crazy sales goals. I pulled in 4 months what some people pull in a year...

This year however, I made a choice to walk away from it. I took 3 steps back in my career and got a year round retail supervisor position in full size brick and mortar store. These guys with a staff of 10+, running 3 or more a shift in a store 8k sqft make on average the same as my little 12x6ft kiosk did. I find it so relaxing that I am bored half the time... I don't make any management choices, no interviews, no HR roles, no scheduling, no invoices... I make some suggestions to the Boss and then drift off to front face or whatever comes to mind. It is like a constantly paid vacation next to what I did...

For the first time in 5 years(?) I won't have to work all of Thanksgiving solo, then both open AND close Black Friday. The sales goals aren't even as high as my little holiday store's would have been... No new hires to train on the holiday or inventory to rush from stock areas hidden in back hallways... While I won't get to unleash the Monster, it may still be worth it. I'll keep everyone posted.
Reading this story was so relaxing. It reminded me of what it was like to work in customer service, of the pressure... and the relief I felt when I finally left
