I Value Life and All That It Is

People often tell me I am mature for my age, which is true to some extent. I had to learn to grow up pretty soon because I have been in some dangerous situations. I can honestly say that I am lucky to be alive, and I am thankful for the fact that I am still here. I've fallen on some hard times over the years. I have 3 particular memories that have shaped me into the person I am.

1. Being diagnosed with Type One Diabetes at age 4. This has really shaped my life, it made me conscious from a young age that I needed to be careful because my life is not the same as other kids. Cannot eat what I want. Could not play as much as I wanted to play. I could go on and on about this. Point being, my diagnosis changed my life forever and has made me more conscious of my own mortality.

2. At the age of 9, I was unknowingly taking a prescribed insulin which was defective, which caused me to enter a week long diabetic coma. Fortunately, I survived that with minor brain scarring.

3. As a freshman in high school, I was followed home from school by a group of much larger and older kids who jumped me, and robbed me at knife point. They got away with an iPod, which is no big deal, I was just glad to not be too badly hurt.

Life can be tough, life can be unfair, but that is how it goes. I do not know why these things happen, and I really have no desire to find out. All I know is that I faced some hard times and I take them for what they are. If anything, it has shown me that life is precious and you never know when it is your time. As a result, I feel it is important not take life for granted and make the most of the time that I am fortunate to still have.
