I Am Proud of My Son

Holding her, all 7 pounds
Sleeping peacefully in these old arms
Her breathing, calm and regular
Her mouth moving in her sleep
Dreams pleasant and magical waiting
To be developed in time, much like photos used to be.

Her 4th day, first in my arms.
Her security, loyalty and shining moments, not my fate to protect this time.
Son, they are yours to hold until it’s her time.
She doesn’t belong to you, but rather to God
Teach her well, treat her like a princess, never see beyond her beauty, but treasure your responsibility.

She arrives via the miracle of birth and
Like every child she owns a share of the future.
Never leave her, never abandon. Put her first as I put you first. Your own wants and needs a distant second, frustrating at times for every parent. Yet if you are consistent, you will change her world in ways she won’t even realize.
Never demand appreciation or belittle her rebellion. Don’t accept her beliefs that contradict yours, rather learn from them. In many ways she will out perform you, if for no other reason than her father out performed his.
My pride in you knows no bounds, but now we share something that forever completes our relationship. We both are blessed with a great adventure and a greater responsibility. Mine is nearing completion with memories my treasure. Yours begins with making memories your blessing.
Love her unconditionally as I do you and your siblings.
Son, it is your turn.
