when washing a hoodie, should you always add softener to the wash

in the washing machine, should you add softener so the hoodie is soft after drying, i made the mistake of not doing that with my favourite hoodie recently, i just washed it on a cold cycle with delicate detergent, but without softener....should i wash it again with softener this time?
