Awkward silence is something that no one likes. However there are many ways to avoid making the silence awkward.

First of all, in situations like these, there might be someone in your group of friends who might say something along the lines of "Awkward silence...." that just makes things MORE awkward - so if you're that person, don't do that. Please.

Alright, so here are my tips on how to make an awkward silence not awkward.

Scenario A:
Everyone's chatting but then it gets silent because they're done talking and then no one feels like breaking the silence.
How to make it a non-awkward silence:
- Smile and nod, like you're thinking about what the person said while thinking about something new to bring up
- Laugh (only if what they said was funny - and then bring up something else funny)
- Suggest something for you all to do

Scenario B:
Everything is going great during a conversation and then you/someone in your group says something they weren't suppose to say and it gets all silent
How to make it a non-awkward silence:\
- Shake you head, look at them with disapproval and then move on.
- Make a joke about what they said to get everyone to laugh

I don't know if any of these are helpful, but I use them all the time and rarely any silence around my has that awkward tension to it.
