@Strawberrymilk: I hated detentions. We had to take our punishment book home, get our parents to sign it, then serve our sentence a day or two later. I'd have preferred a few quick whacks with a slipper, I think.

I hated detentions too. We didn't have punishment books to take home or anything like that, I just hated the boredom and resented the waste of time.

I remember that. The slightest misbehaviour, such as making a sound or even just looking out of the window, could earn you a slippering so you ended up worse off than being slippered for the original offence.
