It bothers me how few people realise that nature doesn't involve competition

I'm not meaning that in a Lysenko way. Nature is made up of a vast array of ecosystems, each of which consists of a variety of niches. Because of this, species evolve to better adapt to conditions within their ecosystem and better fill the niche that their species occupies. As a result, species don't actually compete, but rather adapt to fill different niches as this ensures survival.

An example of this is seen in Charles Darwin's work, On the Origins of Species, in the birds of the Galapagos Islands which had evolved different beak shapes and sizes as to utilise different food sources; without this, these species would suffer due to competing for scarce resources and ecological niches would not have been filled, from those that do 'pest control' of endemic insects to those that eat and help in the propagation of flora on the islands. They all work together and the ecology thrives as a result.

There is one instance of species competing though, and it should be rather obvious. It's when humans introduce species into vastly different ecosystems. That's not to say that things like that couldn't or wouldn't happen in nature, but most of the time in the last several centuries has been human action rather than specific migration.

Hopefully that makes sense.

Animals within the species compete with each other though, certainly.

@DDonde Yes they do

@SW-User Are you meaning to make some kind of point with it?

@MartinTheFirst No. It's just a thought that's been in my head recently.
