Why do vegetables cost so much even though they have very few calories?

cherokeepatti · 61-69, F Best Comment
They don't keep long as say dry beans and grains so when they get old they must be discarded and the supermarkets have to make a profit so they mark up what they have to cover the loss.

try organics.. fruit is pretty expensive too. all healthy food is expensive

Maybe because they have fewer calories, they're more expensive. Alongside that, more resources are used in it's growth and the nutrients you gain from them are invaluable :)

High nutrition and not profitable enough. They want us to buy processed food, with little nutrients. Even vitamin prices are skyrocketing.

Farmers and growers have to eat too

@woundedeer: actually farmers dont make that much money.. a lot of the profit goes else where. plus the cost of things is determined by wall street and demand and then manufacturing.

@theowl: I know but imagine if the prices went lower

it would be like milk prices.. there are times when farmers have taken a loss on their crops

In our place, vegetable is cheaper than meat of any kind.
