Is fondant actually edible?

Lol yeah why would they put it on cakes if it wasn’t edible ? It’d be a bit impractical to expect people to eat around it if a whole cake is covered in fondant. It’s mostly sugar though. I want to say I had it a long time ago and it really just melts in your mouth I don’t think I liked it. Although I don’t really like icing in general as it’s too sweet.
