The Cage

As her wispy, long hair caught the momentum of the breeze, the woman sighed. Deep ravines shaped her forehead depicting her troubles, and the emotional scars she bore, ravished her once lucid mind.
It was nearly time.
Wiping her tears from her face, she unraveled the rolled up piece of paper that she had carried up to the top of the hill with her and she weighted it down on the grass with some pebbles. There had been no escape from this nightmare and she felt her eyes blur once more as she revisited the torment that her abuser had put her through. For years, his unseen leash had tightened around her, drawing out all her strength and stripping her of any rights or dignity.
Yes, it was nearly time.
From an outsider’s point of view of course, all was well in their marriage. He was after all ‘a respected pillar of society’; she, was merely his wife.
She took a step closer to the edge of the cliff and looked down. The jagged rocks that lay below, seduced her feminine form as she recalled the events of the last two days.
It had happened quickly….too quickly. Without warning, her dormant inner strength had risen from beneath her crumpled shell and she had ran.
And now it was time.
Inhaling the salty sea-air, she took another step forward. Embracing the choice she was making……HER choice, she opened wide her invisible cage door and took her final step into thin air.
It was morning when they found her and even in death there was no hiding her beauty. Mercifully, it had been quick, the police said but unfortunately, the same couldn’t have been said of her husband’s. He had been left to 'bleed out' after a violent trauma to the head; the note on the top of the hill, pinned down by four pebbles had alerted them to him.
“I killed my husband,” it confessed.
