I Love to Write Fiction

"Hypothermia"

The cold winter's night chilled him to the bone, despite his thickly insulated clothing. With an aching body, and feet painfully numbed by the cold, he pressed on through the dense forest toward the cabin near the top of the next rise.

"I can't believe the damned car ran out of gas!" He thought bitterly, recalling each painful step of the six mike trek. "In the morning, I'll hike back down the hill, and try to get some gas for it. But for right now, I just need to get warm! I'm so cold and tired!"

His knees threatened to buckle on him yet again, as he stumbled through the knee-deep snow, forcing himself to slowly climb the hill. Only the thought of the thick heavy-blankets on his nice warm bed gave him the strength to keep going.

So far, the annual trip to his hunting cabin was off to a horrible start, but he was almost there, and tomorrow was a new day.

"Just a few more steps to the clearing..." He told his weakened and failing muscles as he fought for each step.

"NOOOO!" He cried in a hoarse, broken voice as he stepped from the tree line. "This can't be happening!"

Before him, all the remained of the cabin he had fought so desperately to reach was a charred, blackened foundation and the ruined crumbling fireplace standing in the moonlight against an unforgiving sky.
