I Am Constantly Torn Between Logic And Emotion

Mom: Hi just wanted to let you know that your cousin Andrew died today :(

Me: Hm... I'm not sure how to respond
Give them my regards. I don't have (my cousin's number)
You're better at words

Mom: Ok...pretty sad

Me: I'm aware its sad, but I'm not good at words. It usually comes out as if I'm an inconsiderate buttface.

Should I be sad? I'm not sad. I've seen him a couple times. Maybe a grand total of 5 months with him. Why aren't I sad? Am I a bad person for not being sad?

Well, no. You can feel whatever it is you need to feel.

Would me being empathetic work? Or be respectful?
wingedjaguar
It could work for them I suppose they wanted to hear more from you

I honestly don't know what to say... I'm not good with heartfelt messages... I'm usually awkward and stare. Example: I went to my step cousin's funeral... I hugged the father and I had NOTHING to say, there were so many variables, and so many words, so many interpretations, so many tones I had to think of. I finally uttered "I'm sorry" after standing there for about five seconds.

I soo understand...

It's alright. Your presence should be enough.

S'what I've been told. I don't understand the logic behind it, but I'll show up when they have the funeral

Sometimes words aren't even necessary.

Hm? Does that play into that thing people say: "Actions speak louder than words"?
wingedjaguar
I think it can. Sometimes being present and aware is enough.

Interesting... Thank you
