How am I supposed to tell my dad I’m in debt and not spending money on stupid shit like he accuses me of?

So back when I got my first car I would pay my dad 200-400 a month to set aside for me as an emergency fund. It’s still my money, but it’s not easily accessible.
Anyway between the last minute apartment I had to get thanks to a failed engagement I used 3k of it. But also to help pay for gas and insurance and food I ended up taking some pay day loans.
Well let’s put it this way. I was supposed to have an 1100 check from work. After all loan payments were taken out I was left with just under 200.
So I asked my dad to send me some money from the 1300 I have saved.
My dad immediately accused me of using it on weed and partying. And I told him I wish it was cause then I’d have more fun. But I’ve literally been living off rice and eggs for the past month and a half. And I have friends that help out. But still.

Idk how to tell my dad about what’s really going on because I know he’s just going to give me a massive lecture. Thankfully my apartment manager is super cool and lets me do payments of what I can so I’m not worried about the rent I just pay what I can as I go.
But ugh. Idk what to do or how to word it to him cause I know either way I’m going to get yelled at by him. Which is why I hid it for so long.

Get yourself away from payday loans as quickly as you can or you'll be in debt to them for ever. If your apartment is more than you can reasonably afford, I think you should consider moving - likewise, they won't indulge you for ever.

@londonbr1dg3 I have an awful lot of sympathy for your situation because I've been there myself. But I think you have to be honest with yourself:
I was supposed to have an 1100 check from work
That is not $3k. The times we are living in probably means that you can't rely on sales commission.

@ArtieKat thats one check out of two. Plus I work another job as well.

@londonbr1dg3 I based my advice on the information you had posted. It doesn't change anything about getting out of debt ASAP or it will follow you for years. Good luck with being honest with your father to access your savings. A deposit account in your own name might have been less contentious!!!

I think you are too old to let your father lecture you. I think you'd better cut loose.

Tell your dad the truth.

At least he'll feel better knowing you're just trying to keep your head above water rather than all his daft dark imaginings.

Why use your Dad as a bank? Use a bank! less stress and headaches.
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
@cycleman because dads are forgiving... sometimes
londonbr1dg3 · 26-30, F
@cycleman I do have a bank. But it’s just money to put aside that’s not easily accessible because I do have a habit of spending money poorly.
cycleman · 61-69, M
@londonbr1dg3 then just use the Bank for your money. Use your dad for the Love.

Hmmm not a nice situation.. I guess you might be wrong and he might not lecture.. but if he does, then maybe just grit your teeth, listen to it, ignore it and just get the money?

Tell him you know a guy who gives you weed for free. <jk>
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
@LunarOrbit “the guys I sleep with give me drugs for free dad, so there!”
tell him you're struggling. he loves you & although it will be hard to be completely honest, i believe that's the best way to get his support.
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
That’s a rough spot to be in. Sounds like this is an emergency.
Have the convo w him sooner rather than later.
Royrogers · 61-69, M
@AthrillatheHunt I agree with you. Better sooner before it gets worse

Just be honest and show him all the thought your put in 🥺

I wonder if your Dad still has the money??
The bottom line is, it’s your money. You earned it, he’s been playing the role of banker. A bank lets you withdraw your money as needed.

Just demand it.. say it's mine and he can lecture you all he wants after he gives it up. He might not immediately have it and he's fronting a bit.
It's nice that he's helping but when it comes down to it it's your money and you're an adult.
Put your big girl pants on and get communicate that you wont be needing him to hold your money anymore.
Penny · 46-50, F
just tell him he's wrong but you dont want to get into it and its your money anyway
MartinTheFirst · 22-25, M
show him your receipts
