I Live Abroad

And it kind of sucks.

The country I'm in is fantastic, but it's so homogeneous that an outsider like me can't break into it. I have few native friends and I can't even speak the language.

I thought I'd love it and I did- for the first year. Now I'm a year and a half in and I wanna leave. I hate my life here. I'm isolated, lonely, bored, and utterly alone.

I just spent the holidays alone, again. I'll never bemoan my country when I return. I'll talk to my friends and family regularly. I will go to the gym, join clubs, volunteer, and be sociable.

I don't regret or knock living abroad; matter of fact, I encourage it. Just be sure to research your country, especially if they don't speak the same language as you.

I'm in hell, but it's only temporary - or so I tell myself.

I’m sorry to hear this. No one should have to feel like that

@river52 thank you :) All I need is a place to vent. I don't have it here and whenever I mention it to my loved ones, it's not something they can really help with. Thank you for your support!

Nobody ever wants to hear this, but it's on you to adapt to a new country or society. It's not everyone else's responsibility to adapt to you. That means learning the language and culture at least well enough to blend in to whatever degree you're going for.

@Sicarium trust me, I know. The reason no one wants to hear it is because it's a painful time for us. We know exactly what we need to do, but it's easier said than done. This was going to be a temporary gig, no amount of preparation to stop the pain of leaving everything you know behind.

I remember feeling like that. Now I sometimes miss it there

@SkeetSkeet I'm 100% sure I'm going to have the same reaction. There's so much I love about this country!
