I Hate Corrupt Police

I had a police car cut me up last weekend. I was going across traffic lights at green when suddenly a police car came across red lights and cut across me, forcing me to take avoiding action. Even though the lights were green for me I was still proceeding with proper caution so was able to avoid a collision.

There is no question that the police vehicle ought to have given way to me but, as we all know, the police think the rules don't apply to them.

Luckily, on this occasion, no harm was done. The next victim might not be so lucky.

Was his lights on?

Blues? Yes, not that it makes any difference. Endangering other road users is not permitted even with lights and sirens activated.

@Caroline259: Every cop car does that. It's called an emergency. Nothing corrupt about that.
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@MrBrownstone: The rules are quite clear. She was allowed to treat the red traffic lights as a give way sign so should have given way to me - especially as I was driving an ambulance with lights and siren activated.

@Caroline259: Then why were you stopped?
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@MrBrownstone: I wasn't. As I said, I was going across the lights at green. Other vehicles had moved over to let me pass but I still had to proceed with caution, I didn't just blast through. Good job I didn't because I had to perform an emergency stop when the police car cut across me.

Are you a police driver?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Caroline259: Interesting because all emergency vehicles use the same dispatch and the police car would have known where you were. It's fun making up stories!
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@MrBrownstone: Not in the UK we don't. The police would probably have known we were responding but that's all. They wouldn't know which vehicles would be attending nor which routes we'd be taking.

I get the feeling you want to defend the police no matter what they do. That's why I asked if you're a police driver.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Caroline259: I defend against slander. Nothing was corrupt.
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@MrBrownstone: Any breaking of the law or similar regulations by a police officer is corruption.

The regulations regarding emergency driving are quite clear. I have to follow them and so should the police. The problem is that when the police break the rules nothing is done because there is no truely independent investigation.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Caroline259: So you were doing what he did.😒
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@MrBrownstone: No, I was going across lights at green and proceeding with caution. She drove across lights at red without first ensuring it was safe to do so. That's a big difference.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Caroline259: So if the light was red,you would have waited till it turned green?
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@MrBrownstone: No. When responding to an emergency (driving an emergency vehicle) I can treat red lights as "give way" signs. That means I don't have to stop if it's safe to proceed so, provided other vehicles were giving way to me and it was safe to proceed, I would have done so.

Haven't you read anything I wrote? I've made it clear the police driver was a woman yet you use masculine pronouns when refering to her.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Caroline259: Why were you driving carefully? You said it was green and safe to go.
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@MrBrownstone: I'm trained to drive carefully! Repsonding to an emergency does not exempt me from the requirement to drive with due care and attention. Even with lights and sirens, there's always the possibility that some idiot will fail to see me - as happened in this case.

The lights were green and other vehicles had moved over to let me pass. I knew that because I was making proper observation. Do you even drive? Green lights do not mean proceed regardless of anything else, they mean you may proceed if it's safe to do so. The only difference with emergency vehicles is that the same applies even when the lights are red.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Caroline259: Why drive carefully if you had green light and all cars were pulled over?
juiceyangel333 · 31-35, F
@Caroline259: were you both rushing to the same emergency?
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@juiceyangel333: Yes, we were, an RTC. When I arrived the police woman was there chatting to a couple of mates. I was too busy saving a man's life to say anything to her, not that it would have made any difference.
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@MrBrownstone: Read what I said - I'm both trained and required by law to drive with due care and attention. If I hadn't been driving carefully, I might not have got there at all. Another ambulance would have had to be sent to replace me and yet another, together with other emergency services, to deal with the collision I was involved in.
juiceyangel333 · 31-35, F
@Caroline259: I guess she was rushing to the same incident . Did you say something to her ? What's an RTC?
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Caroline259: So are cops.😒
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@juiceyangel333: No, as I said, I was too busy saving a man's life. After we stabalized him we had to rush him to hospital.

RTC = Road Traffic Collision. It used to be RTA (Road Traffic Accident) but it was thought the word "accident" implied nobody was at fault.
Caroline259 · 56-60, F
@MrBrownstone: I know. I'm complaining about the fact that a lot of them don't.
Lynda70 · F
@MrBrownstone: That must be the most stupid question anyone could ask. Aren't drivers in your country expected to exercise care when driving? Tell me what country you're from so I can avoid visiting there. Your road fatalities must be horrendous.
