A still life

I am hoping to create a painting as a wedding gift for one of my nieces. She is an avid reader and tag-teams a book review Instagram dealing with booze and fiction. I'm not sure how I feel about the one above. However, it is try number 1.

I like it. I've learnt from personal experience though that it can be a difficult gift for the reciever. My absolutely brilliant painting wasn't as loved as it cried out to be

Very nice try! Nice composition. I hope you don't mind a few suggestions. Turn your painting sideways and check your angles and make sure everything is level. Add a little shadow too. That will make a wonderful gift for your neice.
