I Write Short Stories

Once upon a time there was a man named Philip who left his dad to take his younger son to another country. Philip’s father was devastated. He said, “Son I don’t want you to leave me, I worked hard to pay for your education, you are a successful man, and you want to leave? What if I never see you again? You don’t care? Will you not care for me in old age? You’re going to leave me here and go to another country with little Pedro, my grandson?

Philip said, “Dad I must do what is best for me and for Pedro. Yes I will leave the country. I am sorry to disappoint you but I must go.”

Philip and Pedro left the country, and Philip never saw his father again. Then Pedro grows up and builds a life for himself. Philip tells him, “Son stay forever with me, I am old, please take care of me.”
Pedro says, “Dad I have to live my own life.” Philip says, “How dare you? You are not being a good son! Pedro says, “Dad I must do what is best for me. Yes I will go my own way, I’m sorry but I must go.”

The moral of the story is that we teach by how we live our lives. Not by the words we speak. Pedro didn’t see Philip caring for his dad in old age, because he left to look for his pursuit of happiness. Yet what happens when Pedro seeks to do the same? Philip points the finger to blame Pedro and make him feel guilty, without remembering that he too did the very same thing he is accusing Pedro of.
