It's an immunological disease, often associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Meaning people who have one are more likely to have the other, but not necessarily. Your body thinks its skin is being attacked so it steps up the process of skin cell production and it forms layer upon layer of skin cells because it cannot slough the layers off before a new layer is born. That's how a dermatologist I know explained it to me. You cannot catch it from someone.
I imagine stress could be one reason for an outbreak. there are different kinds of stress. There is emotional stress and stress due to pain, for example.
@Katielass: thats basically how my doctor explained it to me too. Along with its probably caused by stress and we cannot give you anything to treat it just an ointment to stop it spreading
@Ross19: Yes the ointment ,which is very expensive but there are injectables for it now. Humira for one. It's a steroid and you have to be TB negative in order to take it but it works.
@Ross19: yeah, do u see a dermatologist? If not you should they know all the latest treatments a reg doc might not keep up with. Of course there may be contraindications for steroid in your case, IDK, but it can't hurt to ask. all they can say is you're not a good candidate for this because-----You will need a blood test to show you are TB negative before they will start it though. Let me know what happens.
