I Have Been Scalped By A Ruthless Barberette
It had been 5 months since I had a haircut. I usually leave it 9 or 10 months but my hair was looking particularly wild on top.
Barbers always cut the sides too short and leave the top too long. I don't like my hair short on the sides.
With my hair still only covering half the ear, I knew this was going to be a short haircut but it needed to be done.
There was a barber and a barberette on duty and a father and son waiting in front. as they both had fairly short hair, I couldn't work out which I would get.
The barber finished and the boy took his turn. The barberette then finished and indicated it was my turn.
She put on a no 2 guard and pushed it way high on the sides and up to the crown at the back. This was certainly going to be the shortest haircut I had ever had. I had never had a 2 on the sides before and never had clippers pushed this high up.
She put the clippers away and I glanced at the damage. It looked all right. The long hair on top still came down to the ears. She pulled up 5 inches of hair on top and snipped a half inch off. The worst was now over.
"How do you normally style it?" she asked. "I don't" I shrugged, meaning that I just let it hang, roughly parted on one side. I didn't see the rest of the cut.
Finally, she pulled the fringe down at the front, but instead of trimming it, I was aware she was holding the scissors flat to my scalp.
The haircut finished, I looked up and saw the top had been close cropped all over to an even 3/4".
Because the cropped top matched the short sides, I immediately liked it.
I would never have been bold enough to ask for a buzz cut, but I was happy to have been given an unexpected one.
Now two months on, I have the dilemma of keeping it short or letting it grow out again.
