What if I have studied a lot and put in a lot of effort and thought into my work but I'm still not getting any smarter?

Because I can barely recall facts. I do go quite in depth I admit, but how can you understand without breaking it down? After all these years I've finally made peace with the fact that I just don't have good memory, neither am I smart enough to integrate and apply what I read.

Fact retention is a lot easier when it comes to 'non-questionable' subjects like mathematics or the sciences because your mind links 'causes and effect'.
It's a lot harder to retain 'non-scientific' information because you can't always make the link between subject - characters - dates etc.

It depends largely on your preferred 'learning style' and probably of more importance, the teaching style as you try and learn it.
