I Love Wearing Wellies And Getting Them Muddy

During the after-school time, I usually rush home to unload my homework before storing a pair of rubber boots back to school as a kid. Some elementary schools in Canada started at 8:30 am and finished around 2:30 pm and so before my parents came home, I usually had 2 hours of outdoor play time before doing my homework for the night. The school I studied at was surrounded by blocks of swampy-muddy forests. My friends and I would often call them "the adventure cove". So imagine a playground with some rocks barrier separating the sunken swamp/forest and the playground, that would be the adventure cove.

We usually go exploring in the deep waters and mark out the deepest layers by poking a stick in it. Our boots weren't that tall at all so we had to be careful or else we would smell like swamp waters and call quits for the day. We often traverse through the forest from the beginning of the forest to the other side. We often call hard but muddy surfaces, rocks or fallen trees "safe zones" and if we ended up in the waters or deep mud it would be called as the "death zones". The reason why we call them death zones is that the traction from our rain boots would be lost if it were to dip into deep mud or water. I usually ask if my other friends were willing to join adventuring with me after school usually during late fall or early spring.

During springtime, we often love to make mud soup or mud pies too, though we would take turns stomping the materials that our friends gather into submission for our "dirt meal". We would play tic tac toe using our boots as the drawer and the muddy ground as the board. Also, during this time of the season, the playground's ice usually thaws and leaves a giant puddle around the structure, we would dig trenches and have the water from the puddle move through the maze of contraptions before draining out into the adventure cove. Not everyone was involved because the teacher only specified that if we had rubber boots only, we could play near the play structure.

I remember doing similar stuff those were the days. Mom used to get mad if I would come home wet from the swamp or covered in mud, but we had fun.

@jjbabb16 to be honest, my parents got used to my muddy boots, as long as its drying on the doormat, but as for muddy clothing, my parents disliked it.
