I Recycle

We Live In A Throw Away Society... How many times have you heard-oh well, I can just get another one?  when what you have is perfectly good, but you want the latest model, more of the same..or just to make space?

well, in my attempt to simplify my life and believe me, it is an ongoing battle, I try to find a home for everything that has some good in it. I think I might be going to extreme, but let me give yousome examples:  i donate flower pots to the horticultural society., soda tabs to Ronald McDonald house, all my business suits go to Dress for Success, furniture, can goods, books go to our local homeless shelter.  Pet supplies goes to the animal shelters and rescue leagues..my extra quilting fabric goes to a family in the Appalachians who earns their living selling homemade quilts..The garbage man gets very little from my house each week.

it pains me to see people not recycling..to see bags of clothes in the garbage taking up landfill space.  what amazes me is that there are needs all over the world..If you can't think big, donate small.  Feel grateful, share your wealth...

Now there is an extreme group that dumpster dives..looking for edible food and supplies..I am not at the point yet...

Wonderful! You are making a difference to so many and are where I stive to be someday. I've heard people say when they see my recycling/non-spending efforts, "what does it matter? what can one person do that will make a difference? One can't save the planet..." but just YOU akindheart is doing so much!

As for dumpster diving my husband is very opposed to such things so unless he has a change of heart I'll have to get new clothes for my growing boys elsewhere. lol

Wow. I could not agree with you more! Things come much to easy for us. I love antiques and when I look at some of these items, I think about the life of the people who used these things.
I don't consider myself a "green person" but it only makes sense to make it best use of what we have and recycle nearly everything in some fashion or another.

I to get tired of seeing on trash day people having 3,4,5 cans of trash setting out and this is just from one week and the worst part about it they pay the same as i do!! I think they need to come up with a plan to charge what you throw away it might stop all this!!

I try to relocate things I no longer need/requyire even down to rags as the local charity shops can sell them to raise funds, whats left goes into recycling bin or rubbish bin for council, the rubbish nearly empty the recycle nearly full.

Tollguard, you said it so well. this is a "have" society. The more we have, the more we want. This is not only damagingour planet but the credit of many families... (this coming from someone who owns 100 pr of shoes) It is something we have to deal with now!

You make a great point with your story. I live in a rural area recycling is monumental I even shed paper products and compost into my garden. I think people take way to much for granted. Great story.

Having been around for the original "Earth Day" I have been a fan of recycling all along. Where I live Waste Management has put in a huge new recycling plant, Slowly but surely we all get to where you are now.
