They say we live in individualistic times. Is it really true?

Well, I think there is more focus on the individual now, more talk about it and such. Kind of like a constant pep talk of loving oneself for one's own uniqueness. I'm not sure why though as there are limits still to how much "uniqueness" is acceptable and most people just seem to gravitate toward a label and be unique the way that label says you should be unique. The underbelly of this is the interconnectedness provided by the internet so those who would otherwise have a hard time finding likeminded individuals can find others who think like they think and they can all pursue those interests without anyone in their physical life being any wiser. A good many lead a sort of double life that way I think. It seems to me humans have always been islands bridged to other islands. Even most introverts need connection of some sort. The difference is just what gets talked about. In my father's generation, the islands were never mentioned. It was the whole that was focused on. You did your work to contribute to the whole and put a fence up around your island. I suppose it was the well-meaning reformers who changed that when they realized sometimes bad stuff happened behind those fences. I think most changes occur that way. I guess I see society as whatever picture happens to be at the end of a telescope. I don't know that people really change so much as we try to fit into the current picture, of which there always seem to be good points and bad. I suppose I simplify such things though.

There are many societies, of which some are linked in groups by affiliation, and there are various (types of) coalitions between societies.
There isn't any way to group the whole as one society though. "The human society" doesn't exist. That's just called humanity.

I see it as a bit more narcissistic, versus individualistic. Everything seems to be about social media and selfies and living in mobile devices - I think spending so much time in these online environments, creates islands in the real physical world.

@JustNik. It us true that internet helps building bridges for people that otherwise would feel isolated. The problems is that we may believe these bridges are made of concrete or steel, whilst some of them may just be made of rotten wood

Hmmm...there´s so much to say here...societies are quite different from one another once we cross the border of countries, and even within the same country...

@Captured.I generalised too much. I was speaking about our western societies bit of course there are big differences among them

@Arianne, agree with you, our western societies are more narcissistic than individualistic
