Facebook is building an Instagram for kids aged 6-12

I personally don't think this is such a good idea, for many reasons, what are your thoughts?

sounds terrible initially but could be a good idea. Could be a good way to stop kids from being vulnerable on actual instagram though...they‘ll use it regardless of whether they’re allowed. So having somewhere intended for them to go, with a ton of safeguarding stuff to prevent pedos could actually be a good idea. Better to keep the kids where you can check if they’re safe rather than having them hiding where they might not be safe.

@adorbz good point, but do you think they'll be a bit young to be using that sort of socal media? Obviously it's important that they learn about it as social media is ingrained into society, but the idea of them being that young makes me feel weird as social media can have such a detrimental affect on people of any age, let alone younger kids.

@Beautifullyderanged oh absolutely they’re way too young, but tbh it’s almost beside the point. Whether or not they’re allowed they’ll be doing it anyway, and if the choice is having them do it visibly or having them hide it...I pick visibly.

U13s are already using social media and if they are being exploited they could be scared to tell someone if they’re already not allowed to be there in case they get into trouble for it. Having a place they can do it safely without hiding takes away some risk here.

That being said this post is the only place I heard about this idea so I could be missing something.

@adorbz I only saw it in the news today on a Facebook post https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/mar/19/facebook-building-a-version-of-instagram-for-children-under-13

You are right about helping them realise that they can speak up about anything that worries them and to help them recognise the common signs though.

@Beautifullyderanged however...thinking about it...6 is surely way too young for this. Maybe 9-12 would be fine. Plenty of 9-12 year olds will be hiding their ages with an instagram but surely there’s not that many younger than that. Possibly facebook is trying to create some sneaky early brand loyalty there which I don’t think is okay at all.

I think if I was a parent I’d still be suuuuuuuper especially careful with this 👀
