I Think Kind People Are Beautiful

Here is a summary, from CNN's web page, of a monologue Ellen DeGeneres gave on her show recently. She had sat next to George Bush during a football game, and people criticized her for that on Twitter.

--------------------------------
She then addressed the criticism she faced because of being seen laughing with Bush, saying "People were upset."

"They thought, why is a gay Hollywood liberal sitting next to a conservative Republican president?" DeGeneres asked. " A lot of people were mad. And they did what people do when they're mad... they tweet."

But instead of sharing some of the negative tweets aimed at her, DeGeneres shared one which said "Ellen and George Bush together makes me have faith in America again."

"Exactly. Here's the thing. I'm friends with George Bush," she said. "In fact, I'm friends with a lot of people who don't share the same beliefs that I have."

DeGeneres said she believes people have forgotten that we are all different and that that's OK.
The former vegan used the example of how she doesn't approve of wearing fur, but is still friends with those who do.

"But just because I don't agree with someone on everything doesn't mean that I'm not going to be friends with them," she said. "When I say, 'be kind to one another,' I don't only mean the people that think the same way that you do. I mean be kind to everyone."

I love Ellen.

Indeed.

@DrWatson Well, we have two things in common then. :)

If we keep an open dialogue with others, I think we will find we have more in common than our perceived differences lead us to believe.

@NewKidInTown I believe it will be regarded as a period of insanity.

We will play back clips of people chanting loudly in order to remove the right to speak of those with opposite opinions, in violation of their constitutional rights.

The Chinese communists, who will have taken over our country by then after the destruction of our Constitution, will applaud them as the political "heroes" who made it all possible.

@4meAndyou My fear is it will be considered the start of the slippery spiral downward in a race to the bottom.
I hope for a correction, for a leader to emerge that will offer change, but I don't see one.. yet.
And yes, this kowtowing to China I don't understand. When the almighty dollar takes precedence over our beliefs and rights, then we are definitely in trouble.

@NewKidInTown Agree.

I just saw that on the news and it was totally refreshing to hear a positive comment basically telling everybody to grow up. People don’t understand that it’s ok to have different beliefs or ideas and still get along for all that they do have in common.
That is actually a reason I like and respect Ellen DeGeneres.
And Donald Trump has actually made me appreciate people like George Bush and the late John McCain. I disagreed with their politics, but I never thought either were racists, I never thought they hated women, and I believed them when they said they wanted what they thought was best for the country.

@bijouxbroussard i think about HW Bush also even Reagan, the anger was less even in disagreement
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@SW-User I agree. It was well known that Ronald Reagan and Democratic House Speaker Tip O'Neil were great friends. (So were Barry Goldwater and George McGovern.)

I'm often criticised by others who tend to believe like me for reaching across ideological lines. I love to see this. Living in our own little opinion bubbles isn't the path forward.

@SwampFlower i try to tell people in various forums that we can disagree politely, understand other point of view even if not agreeing, most things are not about evil, and compromise is important in our system, you dont alwys get everything

A simple concept that escapes many, and one I have always embraced.
Yessss. I would like to be friends with Ellen - although some of our ideas are very dissimilar.

We are heading for ideological apartheid - at a pretty fast clip.

If you’re only willing to associate with people who agree 100% with you on everything, your only friend will be in the mirror.

@SW-User even then there might be some disagreements depending on the day and time😀

It always bothers me the most, when people who supposedly share my general political views...behave so badly.
