I Like Frank Zappa

RIP Frank Zappa!

Let us all celebrate today (12/4/2018) the death anniversary of Mr Frank Zappa, who died 25 years ago today. Mr Zappa was one of the greatest American musicians. Frank you're gone - but not forgotten! 馃尫

My favorite Zappa song is "Camarillo Brillo", my favorite album is "Shut Up and Play Your Guitar", featuring Mr. Zappa as a guitar player (no singing here), with carefully constructed guitar solos, from a variety of live concerts. The listener will be exposed to the art of improvisation-as-spontaneous composition that is so typical for jazz musicians, but in a rock context.

(... and for a very special reason, I love the song "The Torture Never Stops"...)

Hellen, ever listen to Zappa's Yellow shark album? Interesting.

@jackson55 No sorry I don't know that album. But I see it's on Apple Music and I will listen to it carefully. It appears to contain orchestral renditions of some of his tunes. I know Frank was a fantastic arranger.

@helenS It was Zappas attempt at classical.

@jackson55 He was an ardent and talented student of serialism in the 1960s. Not many people know this. He had a formal classical music education.

@helenS I met him a couple times in my 25 years in the music business. His band was the Mothers of invention then.

@jackson55 I'm getting jealous now! It's somehow unfortunate that most good music was made before I was even born. 馃槙

The 50's, 60's and 70's were a good time for music. I think a lot of it is noise now. But that's just my opinion and $2.15 will get you coffee at Starbucks.

@jackson55 The 50's, 60's and 70's were a good time for popular music. Classical music - not so sure. It was the heyday of serialism (cf. Frank's album). A lot of extremely inventive material has been made later.
