I know. I tell the truth, and they got offended by it. Here is an answer of mine from another post. I find it quite fit for the question that you are asking.
This problem is the result of the lack of acceptance or empathy with the fact. When we receive too much acceptance, we will automatically repeat that amount of acceptance over and over again in our subconscious. And that leads us to the refusal of what we see (the reality) but not what we think (the expectation). The expectation is too big to deny it.
