Fried Jalapenos

So I ordered fried jalapenos from the good Mexican place near me last night. I was thinking I'd be getting slices of jalapeno that were breaded and deep-fried, like most things here in America with "fried" in the title. Instead, I got three whole peppers that were sauteed in a pan, and served atop a bed of onions, and shoved in a takeout container.

It was still good, and qualifies as what I ordered - just wasn't what I was expecting. What things have you ordered that weren't quite what you expected when they arrived?

The Mexican restaurant near me has different burrito dishes.

Some are normal burritos with lots of items stuffed inside, topped with absolutely delicious queso sauce.

The other... they literally just throw only a while bunch or meat into a wrap, topped it with extremely bland marinara sauce and topped with a dab of shredded cheese... which I feel like I could do better at home.

Once you realize there is a clear difference, you can read on the menu which one mentions stuff inside... but considering they're only like a $1 or $2 difference, I wasn't expecting to go from this is totally delicious, to I easily could of made better at home.

Also, I don't think this counts... but I'm still gonna mention it...

Ordering a silverware meal (so sauces which will get your hands very messy) with shrimp in it... and having the shrimp all have their tails on.

I guess that's just a pet peeve of mine... if the dish is supposed to be eaten with silverware to keep your hands clean, then there should not be shrimp with shells on in the dish.

Either take the shells off before putting them in, or have the shrimp on the side and let the customer take off the shells before they place them in and mix it (or eat them straight).

@Viper Oh my god, I haaaaaaaaaate it when places leave the tails on shrimp. You've already gone this far with taking the rest of the shell off, why stop there? You think I like picking up shrimp tails covered in garlic sauce or something with my hands? No!
@FaeLuna This is going to sound gross but I generally eat the tail. Never bothered me that much. Especially if their deep fried but even raw haha.

@FaeLuna Exactly! I understand they look bigger and better with the tails, but not when they're in something.

The two worst times for me, was I ordered a cheese pasta dish that I wasn't familiar with... and it turned out to be a very thick cheese mess (absolutely delicious, but a mess), and why in the hell are the shells on in that dish? I needed a LOT of napkins to clean my hands up up afterwards. Totally regretted ordering Shrimp.

Another times at a Thai restaurant, I ordered an appetizer soup with shrimp in it.

The soup was basically boiling hot, and even taking the shrimp out and letting them cool, they were way too freaking hot to even touch Minutes after taking them out.

Basically the main course was ready to be eaten before the soup or shrimp was...

@MrBlueGuy Are you saying you eat the shell though?
FaeLuna · 31-35, F
@MrBlueGuy I've accidentally put tails in my mouth and could never chew them; they were just too hard and obnoxious for me, so I always spit them out. Not sure how you manage with them, but good for you!
@Viper If I can give my culinary advice in this area, my 2 cents...🤪

If you take off the tail, the shrimp curls all the way in a round whorl-like way. It doesn’t look that good and if you’re going to pick it up and eat it (cocktail) then, it’s easier to hold. 😇

@Vivaci In a dish where you don't want to pick them up out of the sauce, I'm totally okay with them being curled up if it means I don't have to take the tail off myself. In fact, I find them easier to eat that way, all curled up.

I'm fine with tails on shrimp that I'm supposed to pick up with my hands. That's the only acceptable time to leave tails on shrimp, in my opinion. Obviously, I prefer without tails, but whatever. I can deal with it.
I agree with you, I think it’s more hygienic without the tails. I prefer buying the grey uncooked shrimps and cleaning them myself coz I can’t stand the black veins! 🤮

But the reason expensive restaurants leave them on is they can identify the overcooked ones from the perfectly cooked. Also we pay extra money for the size of the shrimps...and this is something that I appreciate on my plate.

I don’t mind tails on my jumbo shrimps but definitely can’t stand them on prawns or the smaller shrimps. @FaeLuna

@FaeLuna Yeah, I just looked that up, abd looks like in theory you could eat them with shell and might be healthier (but more unpleasant) if you do.

Summary: Shrimp-lovers take note -- research has shown that a chemical called chitosan, derived from shrimp shells, might be useful in the fight against obesity and high cholesterol.

@Vivaci you can always give advice! If the dish is meant to be handled with your hands, the tails on shrimp makes perfect sense to me. It's when the dish isn't meant to be eaten with your hands that makes me confused why did they leave the shells on.

@Viper The chemicals in shrimp tails could create everlasting beauty and long life, but I'm sure as hell not going to try to grind through hard and tough shrimp tails.
🤪😅 @Viper
@FaeLuna They’re also full of flavor so it’s widely used in southern soups.
Viper · M
@FaeLuna Hmm, you wouldn't grind through shrimp tails to have magical Larp powers of long life? 🤔

I'd argue that you might of already done more for less lol, just knowing you do help out preparing things and all.

@Vivaci oh yes, and which of these southern soups are you going to be making for us? ;) :D lol jk
@Viper Oh no not the shell. Just the tail. I mean it depends if I'm not in the mood I don't mind just dipping them in the seafood sauce holding it by the tail and then just pulling off the rest of the shrimp with my teeth but sometimes I just throw the whole thing in. Definitely they get shelled though.
FaeLuna · 31-35, F
@Viper If I could take the tails, dry them out, and grind them into a powder to be added to other things, sure. But I'm not going to chew on shrimp tails for like twenty minutes a piece. That's just not worth it to me.
