I Keep a Gratitude Journal

I m grateful that my projects are far-off, so they are not affected by the current pandemic yet. My colleagues have project deadlines in the next few months. They are rushing for work, but the work arrangement has caused many inconveniences to them. Every week there is a different work arrangement, such as working 3 days at office, then 4 days next, and 5 days further next, then suddenly back to complete home office, but this morning the bosses are asking the staff their plan to work at office/ from home this week, in a way that seems to persuade people to go back to the office. These recent days there are more than 10 times confirmed infected cases then each day in the past 1.5 months. The bosses seem to prioritize work (or liability) over human lives.

I cannot agree with the work arrangement with the office at all. Switching plans too often is a very bad arrangement. Arranged meetings are suddenly called off to be re-scheduled and or switched to be held on ZOOM; and people need time to prepare. Half office half home office makes bringing files to and fro home and office necessary, and they are heavy.

They should maintain the home office arrangement to allow consistency which lets staff settle down and focus at their work instead. Working from home and using ZOOM for meeting is not a problem, but adjusting to constant changes and the associated extra work is.

Updates: just now got an email saying that we need to work at least 3 days in office as per the roster in the email. Mine included today and it s impossible for me to go back to the office today within office hours. I called to ask the colleague responsible for taking attendance. He said I would not need to go back today as the email was sent just now (2 hours before close of pay), and would not need to go back on another day not on the roster to make up for the requitement of minimum 3 days in office.

It s very confusing. Luckily they are not totally crazy and inhumane.

Yes, things are in a flux now. Very uncertain. Working from home has become the new normal. Stay safe!
