@westfield Oh, I am sure you are right.

CP was actually a last resort used only very rarely at all the schools I attended (detentions or lines were the normal punishments); but I suppose the threat was there.

In any case the general standard of behaviour was good - and in retrospect I think much of that was due to an atmosphere of mutual respect rather than bullying, petty authoritarianism.

@ArishMell The cane never deterred any of my friend or me. In fact, it made misbehaving all the more exciting because of the risk. Without CP, we would probably have been better behaved.

@Sharon Interesting theory! Yes, for some the stripes of the cane were a badge of honour I suppose

@westfield They were for us but there was also the kudos of risking the cane.

@Sharon Yes, I guess so. And the pain - I assume it wasn't a token beating - was clearly worth it for that kudos. Unless it was the cane on the hands, which I think is barbaric!
